GOSSIP STATION: Laura Scott

We want you to get to know the chicas at Alegre so first up to be joining us on #gossipstation for five fabulous questions is Laura Scott who has been part of the family for just over a month.

Laura, can you start off by telling our wonderful readers why you chose to go in to PR?

Without meaning to sound cliché, I really did just fall into it. Like a lot of teenagers, I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school. I went to college and studied Business studies, marketing and accounting – purely because I thought everything is a business so where can I possibly go wrong with 4 A levels in Business studies?!

I finished college in 2010 and decided I didn’t want to go to university. The recession was pretty bad when I finished college and I still didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do. So, I decided to send my CV to every office job I could think of; I barely got any replies!

My break came nearly a year after finishing college when a friend recommended I get in touch with a PR & marketing company she had done work experience with.

I started out interning for 2 weeks before I was offered a full time position. I literally started from the bottom and worked my way up.

I believe you only find out truly what you want to do and what you are meant to do, by experience and trying things out. I have always loved fashion - I have been collecting Vogue since 2006. I knew I had a passion for writing and skincare but I never knew how that would fit into a job title. It was seriously trial and error.

Wow what an exciting journey you have had so far. We completely agree with you and think that it is all about trial and error as how else will you learn what you like and what you don’t? What’s best about being freelance?

I guess I like the freedom and I feel that there is more creativity to what I can do by being freelance. I like the fact I manage my own time. I can pick up my laptop and work wherever I want (sometimes on a beach!) as long as I have Wifi! If you are constantly in contact with your team and clients, there is no issue to working wherever in the world – that’s a bonus.

I have no crystal ball, but I believe remote working will be BIG in the future.

We highly agree! It’s incredible what technology has done for us; it has opened up so many new avenues as well as opportunities to travel and explore whilst allowing you to work at the same time. Describe your favourite moment in your PR journey so far…

I worked at Portas agency for 7 months and loved working as part of a team again after 2 years working alone. It was great, and Mary Portas has always been an inspiration to me so I loved meeting her.

I also always get a great feeling when you get a win from a piece of coverage you have been chasing for ages!! Nothing compares to that – it makes all that effort worthwhile.

Mary Portas is an incredible business women! Have you got a favourite kids fashion brand?

For Alegre? If so, I LOVE the molo collection this season – if they had adult sizes, I would definitely be going out and buying some bits.

In general, any kid’s brands that are cool, quirky and have personality are a win for me.

It’s ALL about the personality as that speaks volumes! AND last but not least, what is the craziest thing you’ve done since leaving school?

Probably quitting my first job which I was searching for a year after college to get (I was there over 2 years) and going to work in a hotel in Egypt as a dancer. I remember my director saying to me ‘I think you are very brave!’ to which I replied ‘either that, or stupid!’

I had no back up plan, but I had a gut feeling I needed to do it. For someone who never went to university, I missed out on a lot of fun, which my friends had – so this was my chance to get some fun back into my life after working so hard.

Within 2 weeks of being in Egypt, I won my first freelance client via Linkedin and that is how I have carried on since then.

That’s incredible and so brave! When something is playing on your mind sometimes you just have to go for it otherwise you will always be thinking ‘what if?’ But you had the guts to do it which is amazing!

Thank you so much for joining us for fab five we have loved having you and hope that everyone enjoys getting to know the Alegre team a bit more.
