Welcome back to #gossipstation beautiful people! Joining us today is the fabulous Vix Adams who is both a celebrity fashion stylist and the creator of new up and coming brand Hat Rats! We first met Vix when she was working on the 2014 X-Factor so we are so excited to have her back for a goss and to see what she’s been getting up to!
Vix it’s fab seeing you again thank you so much for joining us! Can you start off by telling us a little bit about yourself...
Hi everyone! I'm Vix Adams - a London based fashion stylist specialising in celebrity styling. I’m a lover of hats, coffee, dogs and tattoos.
How did you get in to styling?
I started as a visual merchandiser 10 years ago dressing Windows nationwide for Armani. Whilst working there, I realised that my passion was in fashion styling so I started to build my network and began styling shoots. I initially worked a lot of hours, days and months for free to build up both a strong portfolio and reputation within the industry. Through doing this, I step by step built up my name within the industry.
That’s fantastic! It shows that hard work and commitment pays off! Can you tell us about your jobs to date?
I have done a wide variety of jobs and worked for different clients in both men's and women's styling. Here’s a little run down of what I’ve done over the past year;
I have styled McBusted for 2 sell out arena tours and 32 dates - so that was huge as I had to style all 6 guys who had their own individual look and need to ensure that this was translatable on stage.
I styled Example for a cover shoot for HotHot magazine which I was menswear editor for.
Styled the boys category for X Factor last year.
Music Videos for McBusted, Shane Ward, Only The Young.
I styled Victoria secret model Sara Sampaio in Istanbul for an editorial AND I’ve just taken on Ben Haenow as a client too.
BUT there’s also, lots in the pipeline which is exciting.
Wow you have had an amazing whirlwind of a year! BUT the big question is - have you got a fave and why?
I think my fave was the McBusted tour, particularly at the O2 arena. It was such a fun, crazy project and the guys are just amazing to work with. Having total creative freedom for a tour like that is incredible as there are costume changes throughout. We even had the guys dressed in wedding dresses at one point. Having to find 6 wedding dresses for full grown men was both challenging but hilarious and not always what you first imagine you will be doing when you get into the career of being a stylist. Ha.
That is just brilliant! This doesn’t really seem appropriate after this conversation but we are going to roll with it haha - do you have an ultimate style tip?
My ultimate style tip would be to totally disregard dress sizes. They vary so much depending on brand and fabric.
A size 10 in one store might feel like a size 6 in others or a 14. Buy depending on what fits right and looks right for your shape and you figure. I sometimes buy things that are 3 sizes bigger than my standard size as that item will look better over-sized.
That’s great advice! So tell us, what is it that inspires you?
Everything! I love people watching so I think it's a great idea to draw inspiration from street style.
We live in a generation of Instagram, Pinterest etc. These are all great ways to monitor, catch trends early and to see how they’re being worn all over the world.
Instagram and pinterest are addictive aren’t they? What advice would you give someone who wants to go in to styling?
The biggest piece of advice is to never give up. Learn your trade and learn the tricks of it. Knowledge is power and that comes from experience.
Be prepared to work long hours for free and for a long time. It takes a while to build contacts and to make a name for yourself so initially be prepared to make mistakes but make sure that you learn from them whilst constantly evolving your knowledge.
Fab advice and we agree with absolutely everything! It’s hard work but fingers crossed it all ends paying off! So, after a whirlwind year in 2015, what's coming up for you?
I have my own hat brand coming out early next year called 'Hat Rats' (www.hatrats.com)
I'm a lover of hats and have always had to source my hat collection from New York as I simply couldn't find the quality and style that I liked in the UK. It will be online and shipped worldwide, with an option for personalisation and customisation to make each hat unique. I'm super excited about it and am looking to have product online by March time.
That’s incredible! HUGE congrats on taking the plunge and going for it! Vix thank you so much for joining us on #gossipstation it has been great having you and hearing about all of your exciting news both previous and current! Please keep us updated on all!
